In addition to the cloud service offered by MEGA, the company has been adding very useful functions to its platform. One of the latest additions has been MEGA Backup , a system that automatically synchronizes and uploads the content of a local folder that we have previously selected to the cloud. This is the firm’s proposal to prevent data loss by the user , and thus have the most recent version of the files.
For the past few months I have been trying various cloud storage services in order to get rid of Google Drive . While this service does what it says on the tin, the 15GB of free storage falls short for me, and having my files hosted somewhere separate from my Google account has become a priority , mostly for security and privacy reasons. MEGA Backup is a promising alternative, and in this article I wanted to highlight some of its benefits.
A one-sided backup in the cloud of your local files
MEGA is a service that is increasingly distancing itself from its reputation as the main direct download service. And it is that now, in addition to continuing to offer this function, the service has been expanding with very interesting features. Already at the base, having 50 GB of cloud storage for free is attractive , but its latest feature offers more options to the user to avoid file loss.
With MEGA Backup we have the option of configuring a local folder on our computer to synchronize it with the cloud . In this way, any change we make will also be reflected in the MEGA service, being able to access the files from any device. Also, it works in a unidirectional way, being the local folder the only one that synchronizes the changes.
This function is similar to what services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and others offer, although MEGA’s demanding encryption allows us to manage our files with a zero-knowledge encryption level.
To make use of this function, all we have to do is download the MEGA desktop app . It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. When we have installed it, we simply choose the type of synchronization we want to have (complete or selective) and select the local folder on our computer that we want to add to our library in the cloud so that it updates automatically and the MEGA system itself will do the rest. for us
By configuring the folder, any file we copy to it will be uploaded directly to our MEGA library. In this way, we can access these files from any device , either via the web or from the desktop and mobile app.
To prevent accidental deletion of files, or file corruption, the uploaded folder backup in the cloud is limited to read only . In addition, once the backup copy is made, we can share the files with anyone without them being able to modify them. Along with this, we can also see the status of the files in real time.
While MEGA was a service that for many ‘just existed’, this feature may encourage more users to use this service as their primary cloud storage system. In my case, it has convinced me, and it may be the push I needed to leave Google Drive behind.
