One of Microsoft’s biggest shortcomings is its File Explorer. And not because they haven’t dedicated time and resources to optimizing it, but because its data indexing and search capabilities are far from ideal for their operating systems. But there’s a powerful app that significantly improves this aspect.
Not only is it powerful, but it’s also lightweight. We’re talking about Listary . A feature that radically improves searching for files, folders, and programs on your PC. It’s very fast, customizable, and works directly from Windows Explorer. Listary learns your habits, can organize search results by relevance, and open direct paths to folders. You can even categorize them as “favorites” to jump from one to another instantly.
Downloading and installing it are simple processes, so in just a few minutes you’ll have access to an efficient and minimalist interface. It’s also one of the highest-rated apps in its field by the community. However, you should know that it has a free version and a paid, or “Pro,” version with more advanced features for professionals. But the free version is more than enough for most standard users.
How to download and install Listary
Getting this software is very simple. First, just go to its official website and download the installer compatible with your version of Windows. When we said it was lightweight and fast, we weren’t exaggerating. The installer is only 12.3 MB. Once you run it, simply follow the wizard’s steps to complete the installation (installation folder and standard or custom installation). You can take the easy route and choose “standard.”
As a helpful tip, once you have it installed, whenever you want to use its search function, simply double-press the “Ctrl” key. This will bring up the quick search bar. You can also open it from the system tray like any other app.
Start using Listary
Now that you have it installed, open the app’s main menu to start taking advantage of it.

As you can see in the screenshot, there are two main organizational areas. The first is located at the top, in the form of a text bar. In this location, you simply search for the name of the file you’re looking for, and Listary’s search engine will return results. If you frequently use the Windows search function, you’ll immediately notice the difference in detection speed between the two. In our tests, it took less than 0.5 seconds to find all the files containing the word “Throne” on an NVMe SSD.
The other essential area is the left-hand sidebar. Here, you can filter the results based on what you’re looking for (document, image, video, etc.) and by their last modification date. As you can see in the image, you can filter by last day, last 7 days, 30 days, or 365 days.
Finally, if you tap the button to the left of the minimize symbol (located in the top right corner of the image), you can open “quick” mode. This mode uses a search bar that occupies a small strip of the screen. This means it’s compatible with using apps in real time without needing to keep the program’s full interface open.
