If I were to ask you about file storage services in the cloud, probably the first names that come to mind are platforms like Mega, Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox . All of them have free plans, which can help you at any given time to keep a handful of backup copies or to have some valuable documents or photos close at hand on any device but that are clearly insufficient when it comes to using them as true hard drives in the cloud . Mega, for example, offers us 20 GB of space (but limiting the use of bandwidth) and Google Drive, 15 GB (but sharing space with GMail and Google Photos). If we need more capacity, we can pay, of course , but that is not an option that is in the hands of any user.

But, what if we told you that there is a platform whose free plan already offers 1 TB of cloud space ? Don’t get too excited yet: it has other limitations, but it might be just what you were looking for.

This is TeraBox

The name of this new competitor in the cloud hosting sector is TeraBox , it belongs to a branch of Baidu (the ‘Chinese Google’) and it is a platform available on the web , but it also offers applications that we can install on Windows, Android and iOS , which makes it easy to save our backups.

1 TB (1024 GB) is enough to “store 400,000 photos or 51,200 1-minute videos”, according to the TeraBox website itself.

One of its great attractions is that it allows you to view, in the application itself, our video files with HD quality . Of course, the audio, photos and PDFs also have a preview. And, like all its competitors, it also allows us to easily share files with third parties.

However, its great attraction is what they call ‘remote upload’, which allows us to save files directly to our TeraBox account from http(s), magnet or torrent links . In other words, ‘download’ files without the need for them to go through our hard drive beforehand… saving us time, electricity and bandwidth.

Like the options mentioned above, it also has a paid option, so users of the free option will find several limitations that may discourage them from opening an account on this platform, namely:

  • Advertising (intrusive on mobile, moderate on desktop).
  • Maximum 500 files, 4 GB each (the paid version supports up to 20 GB per file).
  • Maximum video display quality 720p (the paid version supports 1080p).
  • The recycle bin only allows you to recover files deleted for 10 days (the paid version supports 30 days).
  • Automatic backup of videos and folders is not available.
  • Cloud decompression not available .
  • The ‘safe’ function that allows part of the files to be encrypted is not available.

Of course, the paid version offers all that and double the space (2 TB) for €3.99 per month , in case you are interested.
