A Luis Alderete se le atribuye la invención del ‘agua de la vida’, una sustancia a la que se atribuye la curación de muchas enfermedades durante el siglo XVII. Su prestigio y su fama se extendieron por toda España, hasta el punto que la medicina oficial prohibió su venta. La controversia llegó a ser grande, y no se supo nunca de qué estaba hecha el agua, aparte de «de rayos de Sol, digeridos con sutil artificio».
